Chiefly letters (1862-1863) received by Van Gieson from his wife, Sarah, during his service as assistant surgeon on the U.S.S. Galena; correspondence and official documents signed by Gideon Welles and John A. B. Dahlgren; and Van Gieson's medical records describing various illnesses of the men he treated during his Civil War service, together with inventories of medical supplies used on board ship.

A native of Glastonbury, Conn., Gideon Welles began his career as a lawyer but took up journalism as a profession, founding the Hartford Times, which he also edited, in 1826.
